1-2.5 inches high; nearly 3 inches in diameter.

"The early, central whorls are darker than the outer whorls, giving the appearance of an eye to the shell. Umbilicus deep but covered by a brown button-like callus" (Forey & Fitzsimmons, 1987, p. 54).


"A rounded, smooth, glossy shell with 4 or 5 whorls, a convex base and a low spire; it is usually much wider than high. Gray or brown In color, with a white base and a brown interior. The aperature is half-moon shaped" (Forey & Fitzsimmons, 1987, p. 54).

"Sandy areas, from intertidal zone to shallow water. It burrows through the sand, searching for clams on which it feeds. Cape Ann, Massachusetts, to Florida and Gulf States.
